Morning Class
Foundations: Drawing & Design
In this class, students develop an understanding of basic visual concepts and skills while engaging with a wide variety of materials, tools, and techniques. One morning a week is spent visiting area museums, galleries, and artists' studios and listening to speakers in different visual fields. In the process, students sharpen their observational skills, explore basic design skills, and learn to discuss art. This core experience imparts fundamental knowledge important to any artist in any media.
Afternoon Elective Classes
Digital Photography
Students explore digital technology for capturing, enhancing, and producing still lens-based images. The course addresses basic digital camera operations, the visual language of camera-generated images, and computer workload. Students must supply their own digital camera.
Fashion Design
This course is an introduction to the techniques and materials used in fashion illustration, as well as the challenges associated with designing fashion groups, collections, and lines.
Painting
Students work on-site and in the studio exploring oil painting techniques. They look at examples from art history as well as from contemporary artists who are painting in innovative ways.
Printmaking/Book Arts
This course takes advantage of the Sam Fox School's state-of-the-art printmaking facilities and illustrated book studios. Students develop a project from conception to completion while exploring topics of theme, sequence, image, and text using traditional and digital printmaking processes, as well as letterpress and bookbinding techniques.
Evening Hours
The evening component of Portfolio Plus runs from Monday through Thursday of each week. During this time, students can take advantage of visiting artist lectures, seminars on topics such as portfolio preparation, special projects, and open studio hours.
Tuition
Estimated cost for residential students is $5,390. Estimated tuition for commuting students is $3,900. An additional $350 should be budgeted for art materials. You will be notified upon acceptance to the program, and a non-refundable deposit will be required to confirm your admission.If a student withdraws from the program after classes begin, no portion of tuition will be refunded.
Staying on Campus
If you choose to stay on campus, you will live in one of our secure modern residence houses and participate in organized weekend activities with other members of pre-college programs. There are study rooms, kitchenettes, laundry facilities, floor lounges, and a computer lab available for use. Resident Advisors (RAs) living in the halls provide advice and information, in addition to leading weekend activities and ensuring the rules and regulations of the program are maintained. A meal plan will allow you to enjoy a variety of food choices available across the campus.

Please submit the following materials by May 15, 2012:
1. Application form; download pdf version of application.
2. Statement of interest in the program - approximately 100 words.
3. A letter of recommendation on official letterhead from an academic teacher, art teacher, principal, high school counselor, or artist/architect who knows you well.
4. Official high school transcript (most current).
5. A check, made payable to Washington University in St. Louis, for a $35 non-refundable processing fee. You will be notified upon acceptance, and a deposit will be required to confirm your admission to the program.
