Painting

Painting at Washington University has a history populated by such monumental figures as Max Beckmann and Phillip Guston, and maintains a rich tradition of instruction by practicing artists. Students work closely with painting faculty and are encouraged to seek advice from faculty in other disciplines. Progress is consistently evaluated through private consultations and group critiques. The faculty and students work to create an atmosphere of accountability that supports the investigations of individual practice while maintaining a dialogue for critical evaluation of the resulting work. An active visiting artist program combines with studio, museum, and gallery visits to round out this intensive and individualized program.
