Admissions Decisions

Admissions decisions will be based on the applicant's portfolio, academic records, statement of objectives, and references. Students may be admitted to the MFA program upon completion of the BFA degree or equivalent academic preparation.

Specific requirements include: 15 to 18 credits of Art History, grade point average above 3.0 and good writing skills. Applications, with all supporting materials, are due January 17 of the academic year preceding that in which study is to begin. There are no mid-year admissions.

The required application materials are:

  • Graduate School of Art Application Form
  • Official transcripts of all post-secondary academic and art studies
  • 20 still/moving images on a Mac OS formatted CD/DVD. Include an additional duplicate disk. Place each disk in a sleeve - your full name must be legible on each disk & sleeve. Still images must be formatted in either jpeg, tiff or gif format - NO presentation programs please. Moving images must be in QuickTime.
  • Separate image identification sheet (with artist name and any pertinent information)
  • Three letters of recommendation from instructors and/or professionals familiar with the applicant's work submitted on the Recommendation Forms
  • A written statement of objectives for graduate study that includes whatever personal information is pertinent
  • A Resume
  • Seventy-five dollar ($75) application fee payable to Washington University in St. Louis.
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of slides, video, or disk

Applicants for the Mr. and Mrs. Spencer T. Olin Fellowships for Women and applicants for the Chancellor's Graduate Fellowship must submit separate applications. Admissions and awards of financial aid are for the specific academic year, but accepted applicants may request deferment of admission for up to one year.

1. Please download the on-line pdf application form and fax a printout to 314.935.6462 or send an it as an attachment to olynyk@wustl.edu by midnight CST January 17, 2008.

2. Mail a $75 application fee in the form of a check or money order made payable to Washington University in St. Louis (postmarked no later than January 17, 2008).

3. Mail remaining application materials (postmarked no later than January 17, 2008) to the address above.
